One of the most obviously bogus pit bull myths is the old story that pit bulls never start a fight, but always finish it.
Let's correct the record here: pit bulls always start the fight. And they always finish it too, so long as they are fighting a dog that is unable or unwilling to fight back. But not being known for high intelligence, pit bulls sometimes pick on a dog very much willing and able to fight back.
The following video is an interesting study. The pit bull clearly wants to fight the other dog and keeps sneaking around to try to bite him in the hind quarters. The other dog is not looking for a fight, but also does not suffer fools gladly. He keeps trying to warn the pit bull off with growls, bluff charges and air snaps. Finally, after the pit bull bites him, he goes all in, knocking the pit bull down, dragging it a few feet, putting it on it's back and roughing it up. The owners manage break up the fight before any lasting damage is done.
This ended without undue bloodshed, but that is, unfortunately, usually not the case when a pit bull wants to fight. Had the intended victim been some small or docile type of dog unable or unwilling to fight back, we suspect a break stick would have been required to pry open the pit bull's jaws.
There are other articles and videos out there, with more in depth study of this subject. We will update this post as we come across more on this subject.
